Powerful Beginnings

Acts 4:32-5:16

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”

Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

The Apostles Heal Many

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.

At the end of our passage today we have a summary statement. This is the third one that is like this so far in the book of Acts.

It mentions the Apostles activites, miracles, and people coming to faith.

These summaries are an indication that this is a description of a new beginning. Obviously, the coming of the Holy Spirit as the culmination of the New Covenant established by Jesus’ death and Resurrection is what is new.

The reason that I highlight the newness of this is because it helps me to  understand the strange story of the death of the married couple mentioned. When we read about the New Covenant with Israel, we see some similar strange events associated with the newness. God does not always work the same way all the time. So, let’s look again at our passage and see what is happening at this powerful beginning.

  1. Powerful Unity and Service

  1. People are united by the Holy Spirit

It’s “us” not them. Brothers and sisters in Christ.

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are        my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does   the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

  1. Unity bears burdens

What needs do you see? God has given you gifts that He will then use to help other people in life. He has also given you time and energy and He has given you life experiences and skills which are valuable. All of these things work together in combination to serve others.

Story about Mrs. Dove.

Galatians 6: Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.

  1. The love of God is demonstrated by people

I John 4: 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

For God so loved the world that He gave!

John 13: 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

John 13: 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

  1. Powerful Judgement of Sin

The story of Ananias and Sapphira seems strange and out of place. There is another story later in Acts where a fellow wants to buy the ability to give the Holy Spirit to people. Both stories demonstrate a very direct and powerfully negative response. Here is what I see in the A and S story:

  1. This looks like Wilderness judgments

A time of new beginnings. You want them to get off on        the right foot.

Deuteronomy 8: Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors. Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.

Exodus 16: 16 The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”

So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt, and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?” Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”

Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’”

10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the Lord appearing in the cloud.

11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’”

17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.”

Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”

But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”

Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”

The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the place Massah[a] and Meribah[b] because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Numbers 11: two instances. The people complain and fire comes down and consumes some. Then they complain about manna and God delivers them quail that comes also with sickness

Numbers 12 Miriam and Aaron complain about Moses as leader. God gives Miriam leprosy.

Numbers 13-14 the spies story and the people rebel and they are forced to live and die in the wilderness.

Numbers 16 Korah’s rebellion. Korah, associates, families and possessions are swallowed by the earth.

Numbers 20 Moses strikes the rock in anger instead of speaking to it and God refuses to allow him to enter the Promised Land.

Numbers 21 the people complain and serpents break out against them. Moses holds up a broze serpent.

  1. What is their sin?

They have had two separate examples of times of selling     to care for needs. This is a part of the ethos of the new        covenant people.

If you lie about the gift, then the giving has become    about you instead of about caring for the needs of others    and seeing yourself as an instrument of God. There is no need to lie. I am confident that a 50% gift would be acceptable. Why lie about it? They are wanting to make more of themselves. Love is not selfish. They are polluting the picture of love. They are polluting the picture of giving. They are polluting what it means to be used by God. They are polluting the idea of who owns what in their lives.

  1. Everything is not perfect

People are still dealing with sin.

*There is still conflict with authority.

*In the next chapter there are people who are being over looked in terms of having their needs met.

*As time goes by we will see Paul and Barnabas fight as missionaries and go their separate ways.

And yet, look at what God is doing!!

  1. The miracle ministry is like Jesus’

  1. There is a cost to follow Christ

And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.

Story about Abigail in Indonesia

  1. More and more people follow Christ

2:  41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and       about three thousand were added to their number that day.

4: But many who heard the message believed; so the       number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.

5: 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women          believed in the Lord and were added to their number.
